Stardust browser extension: Privacy policy

AI for Ecology ("AIforE"), a Washington State 501(c)(3) nonprofit, publishes the Stardust browser extension and runs the Stardust server at core.aifore.org.

What the extension sends

Only for chat sites you turn on (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini), and only when a reply finishes:

• the number of characters in your message and in the reply (converted to estimated tokens),
• the model name the page shows,
• the time,
• this install's anonymous ID and key.

It never sends the text of your messages or replies, your name, email, account details, or browsing history.

What the server does with it

The server estimates cost, electricity, carbon emissions and water for each reply, stores the result with your anonymous ID, and shows your totals back to you in the extension. AIforE may publish aggregate statistics across all users (for example, total estimated emissions per model) that can't be linked to an individual install.

We don't sell this data, share it for advertising, or combine it with other data about you.

How long we keep it

Measured events are deleted after two years. Backups are kept for 14 days.

Your choices

• Turn measurement off for any site at any time in the extension.
• Uninstalling stops all sending.
• To delete everything stored for your install, email privacy@aifore.org with the anonymous ID shown in the extension; we delete it within 30 days.
• You can point the extension at your own Stardust server instead (open source: github.com/AIforEcology/stardust); then nothing goes to AIforE.
